The proposal reorganises traffic around Popa Chițu Church and substantially extends the pedestrian space. In front of the church a representative square appears, and south of Maria Rosetti Street a second, more intimate space is arranged for rest and picnic. A ring of 20 trees emphasises the form of the place, gives shade and keeps the church as the central landmark.
Popa Chițu Church forms a recognisable urban centre, but today it is surrounded by roadway, parking and uneven sidewalks. People pass through the area and use access to the church and to homes, yet the space does not offer a clear square for stopping. The circular layout has potential, but it works mainly as a traffic roundabout.
The place serves access to the church, to homes and to the everyday routes between Maria Rosetti, Dimitrie Paciurea and Logofăt Luca Stroici. Stopping and socialising happen mainly in the church enclosure; the street space remains dominated by traffic.
Cars circulate around the church, and parking occupies the edges of the roadway and, in places, the sidewalks. Crossings exist, but the walking route is interrupted by the traffic ring and by car accesses.
The church enclosure has planting that gives shade and contributes to the atmosphere of the place. In the public space around it, trees and planting do not yet form a continuous system that would protect the routes and the places to sit.
Popa Chițu Church, built at the beginning of the nineteenth century, is the main landmark and organises the whole space radially. Historic buildings and residential fronts complete the character of an old neighbourhood square.
The square is surrounded by homes and used by neighbours, parishioners and passers-by. Any change must balance access and residential parking with the need for a safer, more comfortable space for people on foot.
The sidewalk is widened, and the main access is freed of cars.
The representative space of the church is completed by a more intimate picnic area.
The ring of trees underlines the circular form and shades the routes and sitting places.
The one-way perimeter remains, but the whole space conveys priority for people on foot.
Parallel parking is organised toward the blocks, and accesses to buildings are kept.
Consultation showed support for more green and pedestrian space, and also concerns about access, parking and the materials used. The solution keeps local traffic and organised parking, but reduces the character of a traffic roundabout. The two squares separate the representative function of the church from the rest area, and the trees bring shade without hiding the monument.
