The proposal extends Mântuleasa Park over two carriageways and turns the fragmented space around it into a neighbourhood square. The pedestrian area is doubled, a direct link appears between the surrounding streets, and the park gains more planting, shade and places to sit. Access to buildings and the local traffic that is needed remain in place.
Mântuleasa Park is already a landmark of the area, but its relationship with the surrounding streets and buildings is broken by roadway and parking. The place is known and frequently crossed, yet it works more as a sequence of fragments than as a clear, comfortable square that is easy to use.
The park and the monument attract short stops, walks and meetings, while the spaces around them are used mainly for traffic and parking. The chance to sit or to cross naturally from one side to the other is reduced by the streets that break the place apart.
Several local streets meet around the park, and cars occupy a substantial part of the surface. Access to properties must be kept, but walking routes are discontinuous today and require detours or successive crossings.
Mature trees in the park give shade and identity. Outside the green core, however, asphalt and paving dominate, and planting does not continue far enough toward the walking routes and the places where people might stop.
Mântuleasa Park and the monument dedicated to Mircea Eliade are the square’s direct landmarks. They belong to a historic residential fabric tied to Mântuleasa Street, to the old houses and to the cultural memory of the neighbourhood.
Around it there are homes, small services and ground-floor shops. The place has the potential to work as a meeting point for the neighbourhood, but traffic and the lack of pedestrian continuity limit everyday use.
The two adjoining carriageways are taken into the park, and the area given to people on foot is doubled.
A north–south route connects Plantelor, Mântuleasa and the park paths more clearly.
Existing trees are kept and completed with new low planting and permeable surfaces.
Benches, rest areas and space for terraces support everyday use of the square.
The roadway is reduced and brought to the same level as the square, while necessary access remains controlled.
The consultations showed clear support for reducing car dominance, more planting and places to sit, together with the need to keep residents’ access. The solution answers both: it extends the park and makes walking routes simpler, without blocking properties or local function. Instead of a decorative layout, the proposal builds a square that can be used naturally, day after day.
